Getting Started with Your Ledger Device
Follow this comprehensive guide to initialize your device securely.
Unbox and Verify
Ensure your Ledger device box was sealed and contains the device, a USB cable, and recovery sheets. Check that the device has not been pre-configured. A genuine Ledger device will always ask you to generate a new recovery phrase upon first use.
Download Ledger Live
Navigate to the official Ledger Live download page. This application is the interface for your device. It allows you to manage accounts, check real-time balances, and update firmware. Install it on your desktop or mobile device.
Initialize Your Device
Connect your Ledger to your computer using the provided USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device itself. You will be asked to choose a PIN code. Select a PIN that is hard to guess but easy for you to remember. This PIN is required to unlock the device for daily use.
The Recovery Phrase (Crucial Step)
Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. Write these words down exactly as they appear on the provided recovery sheets. Never store this phrase digitally, take a photo of it, or share it with anyone. This phrase is the only way to restore your funds if your device is lost or damaged.
Install Apps & Create Accounts
Open Ledger Live and navigate to the "My Ledger" tab. Allow the manager on your device. From here, you can install apps for the cryptocurrencies you wish to hold (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP). Once an app is installed, go to the "Accounts" tab to add an account and receive your first deposit.
